Barriers to Employment for Individuals with Disabilities – a Beginning

In an article by Aetna, “People with disabilities face barriers daily. Often, according to research the most difficult barrier to overcome is dealing with the attitudes of other people regarding people with disabilities. Whether born from ignorance, fear, misunderstanding or hate, these attitudes and perceptions can become barriers to employment for people with disabilities. The most pervasive negative attitude is focusing on a person’s disability rather than on the person’s talent.” (Aetna, 2010)

The agencies that work with the Rochester Area Employment Network (RAEN) strive to assist individuals in overcoming these barriers and seek to employ many individuals with disabilities.

I would like this blog to be an open forum for not only fo RAEN members, service providers and employers, but also individuals with disabilities.

  1. Sad but true people seem to have tunnel vision when is comes to differently abled individuals. Hopefully with time and the help of organizations such as yours
people will begin to see first hand the talents and abilities and forget the “Dis” altogether.
